Kaden Piper Claims First Saskatchewan Crossfire Bullriding Win at Midale

It was a strong showing for the cowboys in Midale last Friday for the D&P Moon Operating Bull Bash & Cabaret on July 31st. With eleven successful rides, marking the highest number of rides at a Crossfire Bullriding BRC event this season! The highlight performance among them was Kaden Piper's 2-for-2 showing to claim another Crossfire Bullriding event win, this being his first one in his home province of Saskatchewan.

The night started with a bang as we saw 4 of the first 6 riders cover their bulls! Lucas Ozirney lead the charge with a 75-point ride on SBB Black Gold, a bull that he has ridden before in Grunthal earlier this season. Along with Lucas, Kaden Piper, Wyatt Fennig, and Chase Skene each rode to the whistle, all before we had a chance to settle in, and setting the tone for the rest of the event.

Following them, rookies Joel Fisk and Dayton Leach, both rode their bulls before the final rider of the first round, Jaden Ozirney, posted an 84-point ride on LSB Bull Dog. While that is a score that has won rounds in the past, it was Chase Skene's 85-point ride on SBB Orange Popsicle that took the top spot of the round. This was our first time seeing that Stevens bull at a Crossfire event this season, and with a top bull score of the night at 42.5, he'll definitely be one to keep an eye on going forward!

Orange Popsicle is a big orange mullie and although has a nice little name, is a big, mean bull and can be very scary... I saw him a couple times and figured I'd be able to ride him.

Into intermission, we were entertained by mutton busting and an exciting calf scramble where dozens of kids filled the arena for a chance to grab a ribbon off a calf's tail and win a prize. Entertainer Scott Byrne kept us clapping and singing along to the music.

Round 2 was a bit more challenging, with only 4 of the returning 12 riders able to cover. Second out of the gate was North Dakota rider, Tyler Villarreal in his rookie year, and first Crossfire Bullriding event. He scored 68 points on MVB Gold Coast with the option of a re-ride. Looking to gain a few more points, he opted in, getting matched up with another Muddy View bull, Church Bells. This time though, the bull bested Tyler who hit the ground before the eight-second buzzer.

Following his ride was another rookie, Jett Lockie from Waskada, MB. Jett recently posted a season-high 88.5 ride in Whitewood earlier this month, and was looking to repeat that success. He matched up with LSB Freaked Out, scoring 83 points. Next successful rides came from two Saskatchewan cowboys, Lucas Ozirney and Kaden Piper. First, Lucas covered LSB Sons of a Junkie for 86 points, moving him to the top of the event. However, it was Kaden's match up with SBB Moosey that stole the show. Kaden previously rode this Stevens bull for 85 points in Moosomin earlier in July so he knew what to expect. Not only did Kaden cover, he also bested his previous Moosey score, this time reaching 87.5 points!

Thanks to his two successful rides, Kaden won his fourth Crossfire Bullriding event of his career, earning $2,110 in cash, 370 BRC points, and the winner trophy.

The season continues into Manitoba this week, with Waskada on Thursday and Richer on Friday. Both are arenas Kaden knows well as he won Richer in 2024, and won last August at Waskada where he posted an 88.5, still the highest score of his BRC career. He currently sits third in the BRC standings with 5,920 points, close enough behind Hayden Mulvey that a good weekend in Manitoba could shuffle the top three.
